Should all Aussie sausage sizzles offer vegetarian options?

Vegans and vegetarians usually miss out on the long-held Aussie tradition of the fundraising sausage sanger - but an online petition is calling for change.

Last week meatlovers in Melbourne were apparently in uproar, with the that a sausage sizzle at a local Bunnings had gone all-vegan.

The Cheltenham Cat Rescue charity was behind the sizzle, telling the newspaper that there was “the odd Oscar winning performance” by people outraged by sausages on offer.

“One woman in particular was very upset and very rude. I think she complained to Bunnings,” Cat Rescue founder Natasha Reus told the paper.

Ms Reus said that the animal welfare group felt that they couldn’t sell animals to eat, which was a challenging concept for some.

It wasn’t the first time the charity had sold vegan sausages at Bunnings, but it was the first time they drew the media spotlight.

While meat eaters complained on talkback radio and social media, vegans have sought to use extra profile to ask Bunnings to offer vegan options at all charity sausage sizzles.

“For long enough the vegans of Australia have had to simply walk past the iconic sausage sizzle and dream of being a part of this great Australian tradition,” an reads

“Not only are vegan sausages delicious but they are healthier, have a much smaller environmental footprint and no innocent animal had to suffer,” the petition says.

say they are entirely or almost entirely vegetarian –  and over 3600 people have signed the petition.

“I love the smell of the onions cooking but only my partner gets to eat,” Melbourne vegan Jacqui Zoch told SBS.

“I would love to be able to enjoy this Aussie weekend tradition.”

Current Bunnings guidelines mandate meat, onions and bread be provided – but on a case-by-case basis stores allow groups to have a vegan sausage sizzle if they prefer.

SBS has contacted Bunnings to ask whether they are considering the petition request, but has not yet had a response.
