Diagnosed with testicular cancer in the middle of a pandemic

During his studies in Australia, Lynco Parenas, an international student, faced a daunting diagnosis - stage 3 seminoma testicular cancer. This unexpected turn of events led to a year-long battle against the disease, but little did he know that the hardships he endured would pave the way for a new mission in life - to become a fitness teacher.

Testicular cancer, according to Cancer Council Australia, is the second most common cancer among men aged 20 to 39. Mr Parenas’ case had progressed to stage 3, indicating that the cancer had spread to his lungs.

"Last 2020, I was diagnosed with stage 3 seminoma testicular cancer. It’s a rare condition because my lump is in my lungs, but it originated from my testicles."

Reflecting on his journey, Mr Parenas shares the diagnosis came during the pandemic in the middle of lock down and restrictions, limiting his mobility and work hours.

The journey began with subtle symptoms- a persistent cough that escalated over time, accompanied by chest pain and numbness in his hands. Seeking medical attention, Mr Parenas visited a general practitioner who initially prescribed antibiotics. However, when his condition worsened, he sought emergency care, leading to a series of tests and ultimately the life-altering diagnosis.

Commencing high-dose chemotherapy, Mr Parenas faced different side effects, from chills to loss of strength and altered taste. Despite the physical toll, he embraced the blessing of free medication and resolved to stay strong throughout the treatment process.

Despite having student health insurance cover, it fell short of covering the expenses for chemotherapy. However, his situation deeply moved a team of doctors at St. Vincent's Hospital, who generously covered the cost of his chemotherapy sessions. A year later, he emerged victorious, cancer-free, grateful for the support of the community that aided in his recovery.

"The most important thing is the support of the people around me," he shares.

As his perspective on life shifted, Mr Parenas embraced profound lifestyle changes. Adopting a diet rich in greens and incorporating green smoothies became integral to his recovery journey. Moreover, he committed to leading a more active lifestyle, recognising the transformative power of physical activity in fostering well-being.

Amid the trial, Mr Parenas discovered a newfound passion for fitness- a passion he had once neglected.

"I am a Zumba teacher in the Philippines, but I didn't take it seriously. Now I have a platform to share my story and inspire others who are going through health issues."

His battle with cancer reignited his dedication to fitness, prompting him to pursue formal training to become a licensed Zumba instructor in Australia.

Through fitness, he found a platform to share his cancer story- a story of resilience, hope, and transformation.

"Cancer opened an opportunity for me to be a fitness teacher,” he shares highlighting the silver lining amidst the darkness.

Looking ahead, Mr Parenas remains steadfast in his pursuit of wellness and service. With a determination fuelled by his experiences, he endeavours to complete his studies in fitness, aspiring to inspire others on their journey to health and vitality.
