H Ελληνική Κυβέρνηση δια του Γενικού Προξενείου της Μελβούρνης απένειμε τιμητικά μετάλλια σε 40 Αυστραλούς βετεράνους οι οποίοι πολέμησαν στην Ελλάδα στον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, και συγκεκριμένα την περίοδο 1940 - 1941.
Ήταν μια άκρως συγκινητική εκδήλωση, ειδικά από τις οικογένειες των βετεράνων διότι ανασύρθηκαν μνήμες και ιστορίες από το παρελθόν που έφεραν δάκρυα σε πολύ κόσμο, όπως είπε στο SBS Greek, ο επικεφαλής του Ελληνικού RSL, Μανώλης Καρβελάς.
Το όλο ζήτημα προέκυψε πριν από δύο και πλέον χρόνια όταν ο ομογενής κ. Κυρίτσης αποφάσισε να αναζητήσει Αυστραλούς βετεράνους που πολέμησαν στην Ελλάδα τον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο και δεν είχαν παρασημοφορηθεί από το ελληνικό κράτος.
Μέχρι τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1970, η Ελληνική Πολιτεία τίμησε το σύνολο σχεδόν των 17000 Αυστραλών που πολέμησαν στην Ελλάδα απονέμοντας αναμνηστικό μετάλλιο.

Η επιβεβαίωση των πληροφοριών και στοιχείων των βετεράνων έγινε από τον κ. Κυρίτση.
Τα οποία τους δόθηκαν από οικογένειες των βετεράνων και η εξακρίβωσή τους ολοκληρώθηκε σε συνενόηση με τα Αρχεία Πολέμου που φυλάσσονται στην Καμπέρα.
Ο Γενικός Πρόξενος Εμμανουήλ Κακαβελάκης ήταν εκείνος που έδωσε την τελική ώθηση και σε συνενόηση με την Ελληνική Κυβέρνηση δια της Πρεσβείας της στην Καμπέρα, τα μετάλλια έφτασαν στην Μελβούρνη τον Οκτώβριο και δόθηκαν την Κυριακή 26 Νοεμβρίου και εξήρε, μεταξύ άλλων, το έργο του Στηβ Κυρίτση.

Πρόκειται για τον ακόλουθο Άμυνας της Ελλάδας στην Πρεσβεία της Ελληνικής Δημοκρατίας στην Καμπέρα, ο οποίος μιλώντας στο SBS Greek, τόνισε, μεταξύ άλλων, πως η θυσία των Αυστραλών ήταν και παραμένει παράδειγμα για τις σημερινές και τις επόμενες γενιές.
Και πως η ελευθερία που απολαμβάνουμε σήμερα είναι αποτέλεσμα μεγάλων αγώνων.
Από τους 40 βετεράνους, πέντε σκοτώθηκαν στην Ελλάδα και 22 πιάστηκαν αιχμάλωτοι πολέμου, μεταφέρθηκαν και φυλακίστηκαν στην Γερμανία, στην Αυστρία και στην Ελβετία.

Από τους 40 βετεράνους, οι 28 στρατολογήθηκαν στην Βικτώρια, τέσσερις στην Νέα Νότια Ουαλία, τέσσερις στην Δυτική Αυστραλία, δύο στην Νότια Αυστραλία, ένας στην Κουηνσλάνδη και ένας ακόμη παραμένει άγνωστο σε ποιο σημείο της χώρας κατετάγει στις αυστραλιανές ένοπλες δυνάμεις.
Μεταξύ των 40 βετεράνων ήταν και μια νοσοκόμα από τις 200 που βρέθηκαν στην Ελλάδα εκείνη την περίοδο και φρόντιζαν τους τραυματισμένους στρατιώτες.
«Η σημερινή εκδήλωση με κάνει διπλά υπερήφανο», δήλωσε στο SBS Greek ο Κυριάκος Τσιριγώτης.
Ο ομογενής βετεράνος του πολέμου στο Αφγανιστάν προσφέρει τις υπηρεσίες του στην Melbourne Legacy, μιας οργάνωσης αρωγής βετεράνων και των οικογενειών τους.

Αρχικά με τον Peter Getes, γιος του βετεράνου Victor Getes, ο οποίος πολέμησε μεταξύ άλλων και στην Ελλάδα στον Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο.
Ο κ. Getes δήλωσε στο SBS Greek ότι ο πατέρας του είχε ήδη λάβει παλιότερα το τιμητικό μετάλλιο από την Ελληνική Κυβέρνηση
Γνωρίζει για την έρευνα του κ. Κυρίτση εδώ και χρόνια και χαίρεται που τελικά ολοκληρώθηκε και τιμήθηκαν 40 επιπλέον Αυστραλοί βετεράνοι που πολέμησαν στην Ελλάδα.

Ο Douglas Lenni απεβίωσε πριν το 1970 και δεν είχε παραλάβει το μετάλλιο από την Ελληνική Κυβέρνηση.
Η κόρη, Mel, δήλωσε στο SBS Greek ιδιαίτερα ικανοποιημένη που τελικά αποδόθηκε τιμή για τις υπηρεσίες του πατέρα της.

Αρχικά στην Αθήνα και έπειτα στην Πελοπόννησο και στην Κρήτη.
Είπε στο SBS Greek πως ένα από τα πράγματα που τον συγκίνησε είναι μια φωτογραφία του βετεράνου στην Αθήνα, μπροστά από το κτίριο της Ελληνικής Βουλής.
Η φωτογραφία προβλήθηκε στην εκδήλωση.
Μέχρι εκείνη την στιγμή, όπως μας είπε, ο πατέρας του δεν γνώριζε τι επρόκειτο να ακολουθήσει.
