Respiratory physician at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, and Associate Professor at Monash University, Dr Tom Kotsimbos, predicted a very difficult winter for Australia, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Dr Kotsimbos is satisfied with the measures implemented so far by the federal government, highlighting the fact that is trying to"flatten the epidemic curve, to reduce the peak number of cases that present at any one time to our already stretched healthcare system".

The winter, however, is just starting he noted and this means that lots of virus circulate with the flu being the most prominent respiratory virus. "Distinguishing the flu and other respiratory viruses from this virus will be very difficult unless we keep up with the appropriate testing", said Dr Kotsimbos.

Asked to clarify the actual facts versus the hype and the panic Dr Kotsimbos, underscored that the coronavirus pandemic remains a grave danger as it spreads very quickly and to a large segment of the population. However, about 80% of the people who get infected are not getting very sick and the overall case mortality rate is around 2-5%.

With the measures taken by the government changing dramatically as the facts and the situation change everyday Dr Kotsimbos warns poignantly. "Whatever we do we have to be more prepared for next time, because something like this will happen again".
