In-laws booked for tormenting NRI woman for dowry

They not just wanted a luxury car but also demanded that Komalpreet divorce their son, Parvinder to marry another relative in the family

Komalpreet Kaur, a NRI woman lodged a complaint against her husband and her in-laws for allegedly harassing her for dowry and forcing her to marry another relative.

Punjab Police on Friday booked her husband Parvinder Singh, father-in-law Balbir Singh and mother-in-law Balbir Kaur under sections 498A and 406 of the IPC.

Komalpreet’s father Baljinder Singh, lives in the US and got his daughter married to Parvinder Singh from Nangal Majja village in Punjab in February 2013.

The Times of India states that the father of the bride spent Rs 20 lakh on the wedding and also gave expensive gifts to the boy’s family. But Parvinder’s family soon started demanding more.

They not just wanted a luxury car but also demanded that Komalpreet divorce their son, Parvinder to marry another relative in the family so that he could travel to US with her.

When Komalpreet refused, her in-laws forced her to leave her marital home, after which she lodged a complaint with the police.

Father of Komalpreet, Baljinder Singh, alleged that he had given $4800 few months ago but his daughter’s in-laws continued to harass her.  

So far no arrests have been made.
