Police operation in Melbourne CBD; three dead and 20 injured

A child is among the three deceased after a car deliberately ploughed into pedestrians in Melbourne today.

UPDATE IV:

Police in a press conference has said the offender is a 26-year-old man and is in custody but is not related to any terror activity.

"There is an extensive family violence history involved including mental health and drug abuse with this person. We charged him last week for family violence," Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said.

UPDATE III:

One among the three deceased is a young child, Victoria Police has confirmed.

Meanwhile, The Royal Children's Hospital has confirmed that one child is critical and three others are in a serious condition.

UPDATE II:

Atleast four children have been injured after a red car ploughed into pedestrians at Bourke Street in Melbourne CBD today around 2pm.

Royal Children's Hospital in Parkville has confirmed that they are treating four children who were injured in this incident on Friday noon.
Meanwhile, footage has appeared online where a red car is seen blocking the traffic on the main Flinders Street junction near the Flinders Street station and Federation Square where the driver is seen driving the car in circles before driving off towards Swanston street.
In another tweet, CCTV footage from a CBD store shows pedestrians running into the store before the car rams on the footpath.

THE OPERATION IS NOW OVER.

Police say three people have died and it is related to an earlier stabbing but not terror related. The number of injured is 20 and police have urged people to avoid CBD.

CAR HAS GONE ON A RAMPAGE IN MELBOURNE

A helicopter is hovering above Melbourne CBD and there are unconfirmed reports that gun shots have been heard. Police rushed and cordoned off Bourke Street in Melbourne CBD after a speeding car hit pedestrians.
Initial reports suggests multiple pedestrians have been hit by a rogue car.
While the police operation is underway, buildings at 600 and 570 Bourke Streets are in a lockdown.

“I heard a thump and thought they’d hit something. Now I know it was people,” an eye witness told .

Victoria Police has confirmed that one person has been arrested from the scene.
Police confirmed that one person had died following this incident in Melbourne CBD.
