Diabetes poses the biggest risk to Australia's healthcare system in the twenty-first century. More than 300 Australians receive a diabetes diagnosis each day. That is, one person every five minutes. In Australia, 1.9 million people suffer from diabetes. This includes all diagnosed forms of diabetes, of which there are about 1.5 million known cases and registrations, as well as silent, undetected type 2 diabetes. Approximately 120,000 Australians have received a diabetes diagnosis in the past year. We discuss the risks associated with diabetes with Dr Ali Zebari.
