Pakistani population in Australia increases to 91,000

The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show that the Pakistani population residing in Australia has increased to 91,000 in 2019.

Highlights
  • There are over 7.5 million Australians born overseas residents including Pakistanis in Australia
  • England continues to be the largest group of overseas-born residents
  • Pakistani population consists of skilled migrants, professionals and students
The data show an increase of 8 percent compared to the population of 84,000 in the previous year (2018).

The population comprises of 55,000 Pakistani males and 36,000 Pakistani females in Australia.

The statistics bureau has revealed that majority of the population from Pakistan live in the state of New South Wales followed by Victoria, Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory, and Australian Capital Territory.

As of June 2016, 27,470 Pakistanis reside in New South Wales.

ABS Director of Migration Statistics Jenny Dobak said new figures showed that in 2019 just under 30 per cent of Australia's resident population was born overseas.

"People born in England continued to be the largest group of overseas-born residents, accounting for 986,000 people," Ms Dobak said.

"However, this has dropped from just over one million people recorded between 2012 and 2016.

"People born in Sri Lanka represented the tenth-largest group of overseas-born residents, accounting for 140,000 people, and replacing Scotland in the top 10."

In the year to 30 June 2019, 538,000 people arrived to live in Australia, while 298,000 people left Australia to live overseas.

Of those migrant arrivals, 64 per cent were temporary visa holders including 32 per cent who were international students.

Over 15,000 Pakistani students are currently studying in Australia.
