An elderly woman has died in hospital almost two weeks after being allegedly sexually assaulted at her aged care home on the New South Wales Central Coast.

Police have confirmed the 90-year-old woman passed away this morning

They say an investigation into the alleged assault on November 15 at Bateau Bay will continue.

New Zealand's new government says it plans to scrap the nation's world-leading smoking ban to fund tax cuts.

The legislation, introduced under the previous Jacinda Ardern-led government, would have banned cigarette sales next year to anyone born after 2008, restricted the number of tobacco retailers, and reduced the level of nicotine in cigarettes.

The reversal has been strongly criticised by health experts, who have cited modelling that suggested the Smokefree laws could save up to 5,000 lives each year.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland says the inquiry into this month's nationwide Optus outage will closely review compensation and complaint handling for impacted customers.

The inquiry is to be led by former deputy chair of the Australian Communications and Media Authority, Richard Bean.

Michelle Rowland has told Channel 9 there will be a specific focus on Australians who weren't able to call the emergency triple-zero number.

There were some 10 million customers who were impacted. What we are seeking to do here is examine the way in which this is operating as a whole, what improvements can be made, whether there has been overall compliance or whether we again we need to lift the bar in terms of servicing customers better."

Patrick Dodson has announced he will retire as Senator for Western Australia on the 26th of January, citing health reasons.

In a statement shared online, Senator Dodson says his treatment for cancer has left him "physically unable" to fulfill his duties in a satisfactory way.

The Nazis salute and hate symbols will be outlawed under new counter-terrorism laws.

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has said the government is ensuring no one one will be allowed to glorify or profit from hatred, especially the "evil ideology" of the Nazis.

The amendments will be introduced to parliament on Wednesday, making the salute a criminal offence under Commonwealth law.

To sport,

Matildas captain Sam Kerr has been ruled out of two matches against Olympic champions Canada because of a foot injury.

The star striker's place on the field will be taken by midfielder Sarah Hunter while Kerr remains in London for treatment.
