Australia’s sports women are kind of taking over the world right now. We’ve got a new tennis world number one, but she’s not the only one.
Sally Fitzgibbons makes waves in Rio
Surfing superstar Sally Fitzgibbons has stormed into the top spot in the world rankings after a win in the final of the World Surf League’s Rio Pro in Brazil.
The 28-year-old beat former world champion Carissa Moore, pushing her into the world number one spot halfway through the season.
"It's all incremental things and experiences, they just accumulate. When I'm out in the water I just feel so free," she said.
Fitzgibbons now leads the world rankings on 32,580 points with Moore in second on 31,175 and Gilmore following in third on 30,320.
Hannah Green’s straight shot into golfing record books
In only her second full year on the LPGA tour, Hannah Green has taken home her first women’s PGA championship in the United States.
It’s Australia’s first major win in a women’s tournament in over a decade. The last was Karrie Webb, back in 2006.
Prior to today, the 22-year-old had never won a tour event. She held firm in the final moments of the contest to win by one shot over Korean world number four, Sung Hyun Park.
Ash Barty on top of the world
A victory in Birmingham overnight has secured Ash Barty the coveted world number one spot in women’s tennis.
It caps off a stellar year for Barty, who recently took out her first grand slam (the French Open).
Barty is Australia’s first women’s world number one in 43 years - the last, her mentor, Evonne Goolagong Cawley.
She’s now part of a prestigious group of five Australian tennis players to top the rankings - including Goolagong Cawley, John Newcombe, Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt.
Georgia Nesbitt claims first solo rowing World Cup medal
Tasmanian rower Georgia Nesbitt has picked up a bronze medal at the rowing world cup regatta in Poland.
The 27-year-old went into the final at Poznan with the fastest qualifying time and despite difficult weather conditions, came away with a spot on the podium.
It is Nesbitt's first individual medal at the event.

"Everyone wants to win so I'm stoked to come away with a medal," she said.
She's no stranger to the international podium - having previously won bronze in the lightweight double in 2014 and a gold medal in quad at the 2017 world cup. She's also nabbed a world championship quad silver medal.
Matilda’s run ends, but not without their own records
Although the Matilda’s dream of a 2019 World Cup might be over, their rollercoaster run has left a massive impression on the game.
Matilda's captain Sam Kerr became a beacon of hope when she scored four goals in Australia’s triumphant win against Jamaica - the most goals ever scored by Australian in the FIFA World Cup.
Her mastery of the soccer field might not have got Australia through to the next round but it was enough to gain Kerr a mass of new admirers.
