New tough immigration laws rejected at Senate inquiry

Laws to give the immigration minister wide-ranging powers to deport and jail unlawful non-citizens have been roundly rejected by a range of witnesses at a Senate inquiry. Labor says the laws are needed to close a legal loophole before a looming High Court case, which could see hundreds of immigration detainees released into the community.
