Sporting legend Eddie Betts has pleaded for the right of Aboriginal children to play in peace, as distressing footage emerges of an extreme racist incident.
In CCTV footage posted to Betts' Instagram, four children can be seen playing basketball within a fenced backyard.
A white car drives past, and an occupant repeatedly yells an extreme slur, before driving away.
"We are not even safe in our own homes," Betts wrote in the post's caption.
"Aboriginal kids deserve to be able to play safely, free from racism and abuse over the fence."
Betts, who had a stellar AFL career playing for Adelaide and Carlton, has repeatedly called out the racism he experienced on and off the field.
In 2020, Betts spoke out against racism after being the target of racial vilification online.
He retired a year later.
Despite the severity of the lastest incident, he nonetheless struck a conciliatory tone in his Instagram post.
"If you know who this is please let me them know that I’m open to having a chat about how much this hurts our kids."
In footage posted on Friday morning, Betts shared video of his kids back on the basketball court.
"Thanks everyone for your support," he wrote.
"It's not going to stop the kids playing ball."
Victoria Police have been contacted for comment.
