The Seven Network said the story behind its new contemporary family drama was specifically written for the ARIA and AACTA-winning singer who will make her TV acting debut on night one of the series and simultaneously earn herself a producer credit.
In the drama, Mauboy will play a part-time country pub singer whose chance meeting with a wealthy city hotelier triggers a series of events that will change her life forever.
The feel-good drama will aim to explore the very different Australian worlds of 'the haves' and 'the have nots'.
The Seven Network has dubbed the production as being full of “heart, humour, romance and plenty of music”.
“They say you can’t choose your family, but what happens when a family chooses you?” the network’s announcement reads.
Mauboy recently told News Corp Australia she hoped her TV gig would create “new pathways” for young indigenous Australians.
“I remember growing up and watching a lot of Australian TV shows and there wasn’t a lot on it for me to believe, or to dream, that this could be possible for me,” Mauboy told.
“So this is an emotional movement for me and a lot of people as well living in this beautiful country of ours.
“It’s really exciting to be creating this whole new path way, bringing that flavour to great Aussie drama.”
Media has reported that the first season of 10 episodes will begin filming in Sydney in December while the Seven Network has confirmed the series will go into production and launch next year.
It is being produced by Screentime, a Banijay Group company, for the Seven Network.
The Seven Network also unveiled its plans for The Secret Daughter while signalling other developments, such as airing the 2016 Olympic Games, for the coming months.
