Lily Gladstone is not done making history.

Just two weeks ago Gladstone , for her role in Martin Scorsese's epic 'Killers of the Flower Moon'.

Now, she is also the first Native American to receive an Oscar nominaton for Best Actress.
Gladstone told Entertainment Weekly she was on the Osage reservation in Osage Nation when the news broke, saying she had made a point of being there just in case.

Gladstone is nominated for portraying Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart and said she would pay respects to Mollie and her family.

"I wanted to go out to Gray Horse and do my protocols to say thank you to the land that raised Mollie and her sisters and her family, and [which is] their resting place now," said Gladstone.

On making history, she expressed her gratitude but noted it shouldn't have taken so long for a Native American woman to be nominated.

"There's a huge part of me that thinks this shouldn't have been me. This should have happened so much longer ago," Gladstone told EW.

"I always say this, but it’s not fully mine.

"It belongs to so many people: the Osage Nation, the Blackfeet Nation, the Nez Perce Nation, every Indigenous actor whose shoulders I stand on.

"It’s circumstantial that I’m the first, and I’m so very grateful. I just know that I’m not going to be the last, not by a long shot."

If she wins, she will be the first Indigenous woman to win the category.
Indigenous women are rarely recognised by the Academy, with only two previously being nominated in the Lead Actress category.

Mexican actor Yalitza Aparicio, who has Mixtec and Triqui heritage, was nominated for 'Roma' in 2018. Maori actor Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for Whale Rider in 2003.

Alongside Gladstone, Robbie Robinson received a posthumous Oscar nomination for the score of the film, becoming the first Indigenous person to be nominated for Best Original Score.

In total, Killers of the Flower Moon received 10 Academy Award nominations.

The 96th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday 10 March.
