The 29-year-old Rwandan-Scottish star of Sex Education announced his latest role with a simple Instagram post

Taking over from the current female lead, Jodie Whittaker, Gatwa posted to Instagram today two hearts and a blue square, known as the Doctor's time-travelling telephone booth 'TARDIS', a familiar image with fans of the show.
“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course, a little bit scared," Gatwa said in a BBC media statement.

"This role and show mean so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.
"I will endeavour my utmost to do the same.

"And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”
Gatwa attended the Virgin Media British Academy of Film and Television awards on Monday in London, and speaking to reporters on the red carpet, said that he was overwhelmed with the support he had received from colleagues and fans across the world after the announcement.

He had been sitting on the news since February and was happy that it was now public knowledge.

"It's been emotional. I woke up crying, and then I started dancing. I'm glad it's finally out and I don't have to keep it secret anymore, cause I'm terrible like that," Gatwa said.

"It's a true honour. This role is an institution. It's iconic and means a lot to a lot of people, including myself. I'm very grateful to have had the baton handed over and I'm going to try and do my best."

Gatwa said that he will bring his own style to the role.
Also speaking at the BAFTA's the writer for Dr Who, Russell T Smith spoke highly of the casting and is excited for audiences to see what Gatwa will bring to the character. When asked how Gatwa landed the role, Smith said simply, "talent".

"Just talent. It was a blazing audition. It was our last audition. We thought we had someone and then in he came and stole it."

"I've watched Sex Education and loved his work and didn't quite know what we were going to get until we got in the room, and then meeting Ncuti it's going to be a joy and a thrill shooting it," Smith said.

The new series starring Gatwa is set to air in 2023.
