Police officer charged in relation to Jai Wright's death

The teenager died after colliding with an unmarked police vehicle in 2022.

A police officer has been charged over the death of a Dunghutti teenager who died after the trail bike he was riding collided with the officer's unmarked vehicle.

16-year-old Jai Wright was thrown from the bike and suffered critical injuries from the February 2022 incident. He was flown to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital but died the following day.

Two years to the day since Wright's death, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) released a statement confirming that two charges had been laid against the officer involved.

The officer has been charged with negligent driving occasioning death and dangerous driving occasioning death.

In a statement, the family expressed their thanks to the community, and the ongoing pain of Jai's death.

“We are emotional and relieved that charges have been laid. It’s been two years without our vibrant, beautiful son beside us," the statement read.

"He was funny, witty, and loved by so many people.

“We ask our community and all of Jai’s supporters to hold back on comments about the case for now while the legal process plays out. Thank you to everyone for your support over these two tough years.”
