Stunning works get the gongs at Cairns Indigenous Art Fair awards

A range of beautiful pieces including monoprints, portraits, and boomerangs have been awarded cash prizes at a virtual ceremony as part of the 12th annual event.

Some of Queensland's best and brightest artists and organisations were included in the winners, with Paul Bong taking out the Premier's Award for Excellence for a detailed monoprint of a Yidinji Warrior Shield from his rainforest people.

The Pormpuraaw Art Centre was honoured with the Cairns Regional Art Centre Award for its whole community approach to their craft, with pieces including ghost net sculptures, paintings and lino prints.

Susan Peters won the Innovation Award for a textile design that speaks to Country using ochres and blanket stitching on sacking.

A body of works influenced by the Boomerang, by Michael Anning won the 3D design, sculpture and Installation category with judges saying "the use of natural ochres marking out cultural designs from his Country were striking and almost 1950s in design."

Simone Arnol's suite of portraits 'Time is Sacred' that convey the past, present and future won the Emerging Art Award, while Shaun Wanjibung Edwards claimed the People's Choice prize for 'Kowmanngen - Catfish Story'.

The online ceremony was hosted by singer-songwriter and CIAF ambassador Naomi Wenitong with performances by Mau Power and The Night Shift capping off the evening.
