A 20-year-old who was shot by Northern Territory police for allegedly threatening them with a spear is facing three charges including assault police.
The shooting happened in Palmerston, a city south of Darwin on the morning of March 8.
Police were responding to an unrelated domestic violence incident when they said they were “ were confronted by the man who was armed with a spear."
In a statement, police said, “the man raised the spear at one of the officers despite repeated warnings.”
The man, known as Big Brotha of 0830, was shot and tasered and spent weeks in intensive care but has since recovered.
An image of him in a wheelchair was released by Uprising of the People on March 31.
"Road to recovery with my brother’s by my side. Thank you to everyone who has been thinking of me," the post read.
Police have now summonsed him to appear in Darwin local court in May on three charges including going armed in public, assaulting police and conduct endangering life.
Officers fired six shots on the day but have refused to say how many struck the man.
The shooting happened just days before Constable Zachary Rolfe was acquitted of murder over the shooting death of 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker at Yuendumu in November 2019.
Northern Territory Police have confirmed The Office of the NT Independent Commissioner Against Corruption, the NT Ombudsman and the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency were advised after the incident for independent oversight.
