Intermarche-Wanty speedster Biniam Girmay secured an emotional victory on Stage three of the Tour de france after a thrilling sprint finish in Turin.
Girmay delivered a late surge to edge Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) and Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Dstny) to the line and become the first Eritrean to win a stage of the Tour de France

After a gruelling 230.9km stage from Piacenza to Turin, Girmay bounced back with some savvy riding near the barriers as he responded to Mads Pedersen’s early move in the sprint.
It was some inspired riding from the young star of African cycling, who powered past the in-form Norwegian to secure a monumental Tour de France stage victory.
An emotional Girmay broke down in tears during the post race interview as he reflected on his career defining win.
“Ever since I started cycling, I’ve always been dreaming to be part of the Tour de France - but now, I can’t believe it, to win the Tour de France in my second year in a big bunch sprint, for me it is unbelievable," Girmay said.
"I just want to thank my family, my wife, all the Eritreans, and Africans, we must be proud, now we are really part of the big races, now it’s our moment, our time. I just want to say congrats to all my whole team, because we didn’t have a victory yet [in the Tour de France]. But now is our moment, I’m super-happy. This win is for all Africans, congrats, I’m just super happy today.”
A major crash 2.3 km from the finish line made for a chaotic final push to the finish line.
More than a dozen riders were affected, among them, the stage favourite Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), whilst his teammate Van der Poel was the victim of costly a late puncture which meant he lost contact with the bunch.
Richard Carapaz’ finishing position on the stage puts him in the Yellow Jersey for the first time in a storied career to make it an incredible day for him and the EF Education-EasyPost team.
Jonas Abrahamsen meanwhile, maintains ownership of the polka dot and green jerseys.
