While it's impossible to speculate on what the world will look like come December 25th, one thing is for sure: Lifetime will be releasing its first-ever Christmas movie with an LGBTIQ+ romance making up the central storyline.
Set for production later this month, The Christmas Set-Up follows the rom-com romance of two characters named Hugo and Patrick.
The movie's official synopsis reads: "Hugo, a New York corporate lawyer and his best friend Madelyn head to Milwaukee to spend the holidays with his mom Kate, who is also in charge of the local Christmas celebrations. Ever the matchmaker, Kate arranges for Hugo to run into Patrick, Hugo’s high school friend and secret crush, who has recently returned after a successful stint in Silicon Valley.
It continues: "As they enjoy the local holiday festivities together, Hugo and Patrick’s attraction to each other is undeniable and it looks as though Kate’s well-intentioned Santa-style matchmaking is a success. But as Hugo receives word of a big promotion requiring a move to London, he must decide what is most important to him."
"We are thrilled to continue our legacy of creating a holiday destination that is welcoming to all at Lifetime," said Lifetime and LMN programming EVP Amy Winter.
She added: "With more new movies than any one cable network or streamer, I couldn’t be prouder of the incredible talent joining us in front of, and behind the camera, on these new holiday movies."
Earlier this year, before the COVID-19 madness really set in, had also signed on to star in another, completely separate queer Christmas movie.
The lesbian holiday rom-com Happiest Season is expected to be released November 20 this year and also stars Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Victor Garber, Dan Levy and Mary Steenburgen.
The film, directed by Clea DuVall, follows Stewart's character as she plans to propose to her girlfriend (played by Davis) at her family's annual holidays get-together. However, it's soon revealed that her girlfriend hasn't come out of the closet to her conservative parents (Steenburgen and Garber).
So, yeah! Bring on the holiday season!
