For years they faced-off against each other on the ice rink on the US and Canadian women's ice hockey teams, battling for Olympic gold three times.

This week former team captains Julie Chu and Caroline Ouellette shared the news of the birth of their daughter.

Liv Chu-Ouellette was born on November 5, weighing seven pounds and three ounces (3.2kg), the couple announced in an Instagram post.
"I feel truly blessed to experience this incredible adventure with my love and best friend Julie," Ouellette said.

"I did not realise it was possible to love this much until I met this little buddle [sic] of joy!

"Cheers to the sleepless nights to come!"

The couple, who were teammates on Les Canadiennes de Montreal in the Canadian Women's Hockey League last season, have eight Olympic medals between them.

They first battled for Olympic gold in 2002 when they wore the same jersey number - 13 - for the US and Canadian teams, and faced-off again in 2010 and 2014, with the Canadians winning each time.

In addition to having two champion parents, "Liv was on the ice to win the Clarkson Cup with Les Canadiennes de Montreal this past March", Ouellette revealed.

Chu called Liv their "greatest blessing", adding that: "We couldn't have felt luckier until we were blessed with the most incredible Gift so far".

Fans were quick to post words of congratulations on social media, with many commenting on how inspiring the couple are.

On Instagram, @yellsyellingly wrote: "Congratulations!!! An inspiration to girls everywhere, and especially the LGBT+ kids like me!! She's gonna have the best moms," and @mmgallant76 said: "What a lucky little girl to have such amazing role models."

On Twitter, people were keen to know how soon Liv would be lacing up her skates, and where her loyalties would lie.
