Lizzo really wants to play Ursula in 'The Little Mermaid'

The star has continued campaigning Disney for the role, despite reports it's going to Melissa McCarthy.

The internet was divided this week upon learning the news that actress and singer Halle Bailey would be playing the role of Ariel in Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

According to director Rob Marshall, the 19-year-old was selected for her "glorious singing voice" and because she "possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence and substance" that are the "intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role."
However, the internet was also up-in-arms over the reported consideration of Melissa McCarthy for the role of beloved Disney super-villain, Ursula - particularly considering singer/rapper Lizzo has been campaigning for the part so publicly since late last year.

Now, a week after Lizzo of her singing Ursula's 'Poor Unfortunate Souls' track, dressed up in full costume, fans are rallying behind a to give Lizzo a shot at the role.
The petition reads: "Lizzo is a big grrrrl with the rising star power and the sheer vocal ability that make her the perfect Ursula casting decision. Truth Hurts, and Disney seriously needs to rethink this casting."

Lizzo retweeted a link to the petition alongside the caption "omg", telling fans that she did, in fact, audition for the part.

However, because the character of Ursula was originally modeled after famous drag personality and , some members of the LGBTIQ+ community have commented that she should be played by a queer artist, with names like Tituss Burgess and Drag Race star Ginger Minj offered up as alternatives.

Either way, Disney's casting agents are stirring up a whole bunch of conversation - and we're here for it.
