People are getting emotional over short animation 'Hair Love'

A new short animation called Hair Love is leaving movie-goers emotional, with Viola Davis tweeting that it "burst my heart wide open".

The five-minute Sony Animation project, which to get off the ground before becoming a book, is currently playing in US cinemas as an opener to Angry Birds 2 - and audiences can't stop raving about it.

According to the film's synopsis, Hair Love "centres around the relationship between an African-American father, Stephen, his daughter, Zuri and her hair."

It continues: "Despite having long locks, Stephen has been used to his wife doing his daughter’s hair, so when she is unavailable right before a big event, Stephen will have to figure it out on his own. This sounds simple enough, but we soon come to find that Zuri’s hair has a mind of its own."
The animation is already making an impact, proving, according to some, that there's a real appetite for animated movies focusing on the experiences of people of colour.

"As a father myself, I made a connection with his plight, but the specificity of the problem was a learning experience for me," one viewer tweeted. "Beautiful story!! Congrats to all involved!!"

Another tweeted: " is one of the year’s great success stories."

"From an idea to a book to a short film to the big screen... and, who knows, maybe the Oscars - it’s been pretty tremendous to watch how it’s influenced conversation."
