The index includes 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations.

The list incorporates all types of visas to enter a country including visa-free access, with an e-visa, with a visa on arrival, or with a normal visa.

According to Henley's premium, passports will end up losing their access in a post-COVID world and this crisis will make international travel unpredictable in the long term.

Prof. Dr Yossi Harpaz, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Tel Aviv University says that globally passports will temporarily decrease in value in these uncertain times while the demand for dual citizenships and investors visa will see a significant increase.

"Even as countries open their borders, it is expected that numerous governments will use epidemiological concerns as a justification for imposing new immigration restrictions and nationality-targeted travel bans that will mainly be aimed at citizens of developing countries," says Prof. Harpaz.

Japan and Singapore top the passport index

Without taking the temporary travel bans into account due to COVID-19, South East-Asian countries Japan and Singapore hold the top two positions followed by Korea and Germany in the 3rd place.

European nations Italy, Finland, Spain and Luxembourg hold the 4th place, while Denmark and Austria share the 5th place jointly.

Dr Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners says that there is an increase in demand for 'residence and citizenship options'.

"We have seen extraordinary upheaval over the past few months, with many certainties falling away. For investors and their families, having second citizenship or an alternative residence is an even more precious asset than ever before, as concerns over access to first-rate healthcare, global mobility, and quality of life take on a new urgency," says Dr Steffen.

Australia holds the 9th position shared with Canada. Australians can travel to 183 countries visa-free.
