Meet Rupinderdeep Kaur (PhD), a skilled migrant from India who’s a lecturer at the University of South Australia (Adelaide) and a volunteer for the State Emergency Services (SES) in Australia. Speaking with SBS Punjabi, she shares her journey migrating to Australia as an academic and how she volunteers in lifesaving SES rescue operations.

Speaking to SBS Punjabi, Rupinderdeep speaks about her experience migrating from India as a skilled migrant and finding a new home as an academic and volunteer within the Australian community.

A volunteer training coordinator at SES, she helps on the front lines in cases of emergency.
Joining the SES was more than just a volunteering opportunity for me, it was a calling to serve my newfound community in times of need.

"Like all Punjabis, helping others is in my blood. I also train new volunteers to be safe, correctly use their toolkits, conduct operations, and learn other rescue skills," she says.

“Many new migrants aren’t aware of the kind of help rescue services like the SES provide. So, there’s a growing need to raise awareness and what better way to do so than being a part of the organisation myself," shares Rupinderdeep, reflecting on her experience.
